Moving day is here and it can be a stressful time. That’s why we have compiled our top 12 tips to help make your move smooth and easy. From our experience of helping thousands of customers move, these steps will prepare you for success.

Before the truck comes to your home on Moving Day, be sure to give yourself ample time for final preparations. Don’t underestimate how quickly the day can go – plan such that you will have twice as much time as what you expect. This includes waking up early, dropping off children at school or with a sitter and making arrangements for pets so they don’t slip out of the house while we are transporting furniture. To make sure nothing gets overlooked, it’s best to keep a pen and notepad near you.
In the days leading up to a move, it’s important to make sure you have essentials on hand. Toothbrushes, cell phone chargers, hand wash, medication, toilet paper, pillows and blankets should all be gathered together in advance. You may choose to use boxes or luggage that you already own – but don’t worry; your moving team is equipped and ready to help out with extra items too. Once this is done, find a secure spot in the house for your suitcase while items are being loaded onto the truck. Be sure that it is separated from everything else during this time.
Before the truck arrives at the property, it’s important to do one last sweep around each room and the kitchen and bathroom. Don’t forget to bring along your paper towels and surface spray; these will be useful for cleaning when you reach your destination. Once our team leaves, a mop should be used for one final run over of the residence. It may also be wise to take a look under hotplates in traditional cookers – some Superhosts do this in order check for any leftovers. As a helpful tip, we suggest keeping an eraser sponge and cream cleaner on hand to remove any marks on walls or doorways after you’ve finished packing away all of your boxes.
Before you hand over the keys to the new owner and the super, be sure that all mail will continue to reach them by leaving a note with your forwarding address. Also, make certain that all of your utilities are in order; write yourself a reminder to follow up right away in case you haven’t updated them as yet.
Before the movers arrive, it’s important to be prepared. Make sure that you keep an eye on the volume for any incoming calls, as well as having a charged cell phone nearby in case of any last minute changes. Having a portable charger is especially handy today, so keeping it close is highly advised.
Before you take the plunge and start the move, ensure that all key pieces of information are discussed. This is especially important when it comes to doorman buildings and Co-Op properties – make sure that your removalists know what to expect when they arrive. It’s also beneficial to be close by during the relocation process so that any troubleshooting issues or questions can be handled quickly. Then double check that you have the cell phone details of your moving team in case you have any traffic issues or unexpected delays along the way.
Lock windows and doors. Do that final sweep that means no delays to having your bond returned. Leave the keys behind as per your arrangement with the landlord or building. Renters tip: take photographs of the condition of each room before you leave.
We are approaching the end of the move but there are still some important steps to complete. Once your removalists have gained entry, they will be able to work with you on where to place your boxes and furniture while they unload. Renters tip: take condition photographs for your records and identify any issues to document with your building management.
Upon arrival, check that hot water, electricity, and wifi are working. Contact the property manager if you need to make any changes. This is also a good time to check if the property is secure for the arrival of any young children or pets, i.e check fencing, gates, windows and access points.
When our Removalists finish your job, they’ll do a walkthrough with you to ensure everything is in place.
